Self-employed

Health insurance built for self-employed people.

Tax-deductible. Marketplace-eligible. No employer required. We’ll find the plan that fits how you work.

What this means for you

The self-employed health insurance shortlist.

  • Premiums are usually tax-deductible (Schedule 1, line 17) for self-employed people.
  • Most freelancers qualify for an ACA marketplace subsidy you can't get through COBRA or a private exchange.
  • Plans from UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, Oscar, and Ambetter compared side-by-side.
  • Short-term and 1099-friendly options for in-between-contract coverage.

How we help

What working with Plansure looks like.

We run your subsidy math.

Self-employed income is lumpy. We model best-case, worst-case, and likely income for the coverage year so your subsidy projection doesn't blow up at tax time.

We file the SEP if you qualify.

Losing a contract, moving, getting married. These all trigger a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. We confirm your eligibility and submit the paperwork.

We stay your broker.

Self-employed people change income, coverage needs, and states more than W-2 employees. We're the same broker through every change.

Common questions

Questions most clients ask.

Is my premium really tax-deductible?
If you're self-employed and your business has net income, yes. The self-employed health insurance deduction (Schedule 1, line 17) lets you write off premiums for yourself, your spouse, and dependents. We can't give tax advice but your CPA can confirm.
Should I use COBRA after leaving a W-2 job?
Usually no. COBRA is full unsubsidized premium plus a 2% admin fee. A Plansure marketplace plan with subsidy is almost always cheaper. We compare side-by-side before you decide.
What if my income is unpredictable?
That's the case for most 1099 workers. We project your income conservatively, set up the subsidy with a buffer, and review again at year-end so you don't owe back any credit.
